Knowledge about and treatment for congenital hand anomalies can be difficult to access due to the ultra specialisation of this field. For this reason, we have added a session on this topic in the Level II Acquired Conditions course. This session included an overview of classificiation of congenital hand anomalies, the psychology involved - particularly for the parents -, key roles for the hand therapist, assessing the paediatric hand, and a tour of the most commonly seen anomalies. This included detail about the condition, the surgery available and the role of the hand therapist.
FEEDBACK about the session on congenital hands from the BAHT representative on the 2007 Acquired Conditions course was "an excellent session" and from the delegates included:
Very interesting – lots of new info for me
Enjoyed case studies as made it feel more real
Will be very helpful to refer back to if I need to treat any in future
Interesting and great to have anecdotal stories
Fascinating and excellent for those of us who don’t routinely see these
The topics mentioned above equate to a half or one day course. If practical splinting were involved, the course would need to be at least one day.
If you would like us to run this course for you please let us know.
